Been a local for ONE WEEK!

Crazy. Time has flown. I have been a Hong Kong local for a solid 1 week and about 1 hour. It doesn't seem like it's been that long- I mean yesterday was my first trip to the grocery store and I have only had 2 Chinese meals (but really just 1 since one meal was Vietnam noodles). I need to step up my game because time is flyin by!!!

Speaking of the grocery store I have got to share my experience. Last night after work I decided I needed to make a trip. Wasn't sure what I needed since I brought my own mac and cheese and already found the best pizza in the world but knew I needed the whole shopping experience.
So I left work. Yup that is the big ole escalator you go up and down inside our building. On the side there are waterfalls- pretty awesome (And that's me in the mirror taking a picture haha) Yes, so I left work and went home and put my game face on. I headed to the Wellcome- the neighborhood grocery store!!

Double ll...don't get it.
It looked kinda similar to ours. The produce was in the front with fruits and veggies on one side and then hot foods (mostly meat) on the other. As you walked back there were isles of ton of stuff. To my surprise most of it was American stuff with English and little Chinese Characters on the box. I was shocked! I thought this was going to be some type of crazy experience..but it was more 'normal' than anything.

BTW- they have marshmallows here so I might be making some good ole rice krispy treats if I want to get Fancy!

Meggo I found your cookies!!!! When we lived in Greece for a summer and worked at the Agora on the dig we had a cookie break 2x a day. Best part of the day by far. They fed us Digestive cookies and Meg loved them and would buy a pack a week to go along with her lunch. Don't worry Meggo- I'll bring you home a pack :)
They had icecream but in shorter pints because I don't think people have big freezers here. Shooot I don't even have a freezer so I couldnt buy any! Let me take that back- I so could have and would have ate it all in one sitting (cause you can't let good things go to waste!) But it was already pushing 8:30 and  it was a work night and my bedtime is about 9:30 so I wouldn't have had enough time to fully enjoy it. Don't worry blog friends- I'll get some before I go!
AMERICA!!!!!!!!
The ONLY CASE of American beer and it was hidden. Don't worry momma, I didn't buy it. Why would I want to sit at home and drink PBR alone when I can go to the hip bars up the street and get a good beer? Just thought it was funny that's what the Chinese probably think is true American beer..and they're kinda right about it.

(the piece of paper was a flyer) OH and they charge you for grocery bags here too.
So this is what I ended up with. Doritos because I needed them, Stouffer's lasagna with meat and sauce because it had 38 grams of protein and I needed that too, and peanut butter so I could make a little sandwich for lunch because on Wednesday I paid 11 American Dollars (about 90 HKD) for this...
They give you a spoon and knife instead of a fork- before I come home I'll find out why they don't like forks..
and it so wasn't worth it (it came from this place in our office building- it was bruschetta..). So I was all about some peanut butter- OH and baggies to carry it to work in. BOOM! Grocery shopping completed. All for HNK108 (about $13 USD).

That's how you do it friends. Buy the staples and what you like. And get the protein- that's important too. And a look at my pantry when I put my findings away...
Starbucks, mac and cheese (blue box all the way- and kind that just takes water so I don't have to get any dairy), Doritos, and Skippy- what's not to love?
I'm so college........and totally single. haha! Home girl is not cookin until January! (unless its Christmas dinner with momma- I'll help out cause momma dukes can't do that alone).

Have a great Thursday!! Thanks for readin :)

  1. Another amazing post that has made my day! You didn't buy any shake n pour? Did they have easy mac there so you can re-stock? Also, please do get to the bottom of the Chinese's dislike of forks. For shame!
    Have fun!!! - BJC

  2. Hey, I thought I saw you there the other day. I was wearing a pink shirt. How come you didn't say hello? I was just finishing up stealing all the forks in Hong Kong. You might have been victim to some of my antics today.

    Hope all is well.

  3. Love that you found those cookies...I ate a whole roll when we were in Curaco. Bad news B does not share my love of those cookies!

Glad you know you are eating something other than pizza, although not sure that mac and cheese counts too much!
    have fun, xoxo Meg
