Happy FRIDAY!!!! We made it through the week. It seems to have flown by here because Charlottesville (and the rest of the USA) are so far behind it seems like our days are gone before we know it here! Hope you all have had a great week!
My week ended with this. A WINDOW WASHER outside with no ropes attached to him or harness- only his little metal bucket he was standing in washing the windows on the 49th floor! No way would that EVER be my dream job.
Moving on. Friday I didn't have any plans for lunch and CK and Grace (who I have had the opportunity to get to know through some workshops I participated in this week) invited me for lunch. CK is from Korea so we went to this little Korean place it was by far the best food I have tried since I have been here! It was SO GOOD!!!!! For utensils I had a big spoon and of course chopsticks. We had rice dishes, potatoes, and noodles...CK saw my struggle and without even asking he asked for a fork (in Korean so I had no idea what was going on) I saw the man go to a back area and came out with a fork!!! (so they do keep them hidden from view!) I told CK I was going to keep going to that place and practice so when we go back before I leave I'll be a pro and won't need 5 different utensils to eat one meal.
At lunch they gave me a ton of ideas of what to do this weekend! It started with heading across the Victoria Harbor to see the Light Show at 8pm. After I got off work at 6pm (which is the first Friday in about 2 years I haven't had a 1/2 day!) I went home, had a peanut butter sandwich, and headed back towards the office where the ferry was. The Star Ferry is pretty famous and a MUST DO in HNK. It was pretty cool- the whole trip cost me $0.62!!!!!!! I was amazing how cheap it was.
The Pier Building you see as you are walking on the foot path across all the streets

It was a beautiful night and the sky was clear so you could see the buildings perfectly. After I made my way across the harbor and got off the ferry I made way up some stairs to a "viewing area" where a ton of people were already gathered. They have a railing you can sit on and I found a spot between 2 sets of girls and they were nice enough to let me squeeze in between them- haha. Here's the view...
The CFA office is the shorter building to the left right behind the tallest building.

These buildings were to the left of the shot above (couldn't get them ALL in one picture) |
And Here is the Video of some of the lights. It was pretty awesome!!!!!!!!!
After the show I made my way down to where I had seen some street dancing going on- needed to see what the deal was. To my surprise it was a legit street dancing competition. they had a little dance floor, a DJ spinnin the jams, spot lights to light the stage, photographers/video cameras, and MC's. So I found a little corner and watched all the dancers. They would dance for a minute by themselves when their number was called and then after about 10 they would call out 2 people for a DANCE OFF. It was just like the movie You Got Served but real life.
Tyler the guy that dances first would be you. Sorry the video is sideways- just wanted to see these guys weren't too bad tearin up the dance floor!
DJ, MC, lights camera and the dancer is being crazy on the ground |
After watching for a little while I turn and headed down the street to find what all was located across the harbor from where I was used to roaming the streets. And look what I found..!!!
Total fake out though. I went inside really excited and it turned out to be a REALLY expensive place with no J.Crew in sight! There was the Jimmy Choo corner and hundreds of those really expensive shoes with the red bottom (starts with an L..) and other name brands like that. HANDS.IN.POCKETS. and I didn't touch anything! I made my way upstairs and in the back corner was the J.Crew section. There were about 10 pieces. One being a beautiful kelly green coat that of course caught my eye...and after calculations I figured out it cost around $450. And the tan jacket in the picture? That's a good $700. nothankyou.
So I headed to the ferry and went back to Central Hong Kong and what I was used to. I was walking by my office building when I heard some good ole jams from USA and went to investigate...jams were playing...a lot of men...and about 10 drafts at the bar???? SOLD. Happy Friday!
Hope you all enjoy your Saturday of RMC HOMECOMING!!! and also football. Sure am missing all my good ole peeps right now and thankgod I don't get facebook when I leave the apartment so I won't be too sad all day with constant reminders I'm not there. Live it up and tell me stories.
